Silviton's half-open eyes reflected the sliver of the cloudy sky that peered into the canyon. The overcast day was relatively bright, but deep in the canyon only a little light filtered down through the overhangs and cliff brush. A low and long grumble came from her stomach. How many days since she had last eaten?
Letting out a slight groan, Silviton rolled on her side and squinted at the canyon wall, which bore the etchings of 8 tally marks; One for each day that she hadn't had a full meal. She had miraculously survived being tossed head first into this cursed canyon, but hadn't escaped injury. During the first few days, Silviton had used her meager magical abilities to stabilize herself and mend her most grievous wounds. But the recovery had taken it's toll and after that she had only been able to conjure up scraps. Now, she was too weak to conjure anything, and barely had enough energy to cast even a simple illumination spell.
What now? Is this how it would end? And what of her target, Radosk? No doubt he had already met with his dealer and acquired the Erupting Sphere, but maybe there was still time to stop him from using it... if she could escape?
Silviton lazily rolled over again and reached for her sack. She grabbed the bottom and emptied it's contents onto the ground in front of her. Her grappling hook and rope had been confiscated, but the idiots had left everything else. What could she use?
Bigglethumb, a different kind of idiot, but one she had called a mentor, had gifted her some seeds before she had set out on her task. She took the folded cloth and carefully opened it, revealing a handful of what appeared to be apple seeds. What had he said... something about her growing up too quickly?
While an idiot of sorts, Bigglethumb had been a suprisingly wise mentor. However, his words were never direct and often hid some truth she had to spend hours contemplating on to actually uncover. Maybe these seeds held some magic of their own?
Silviton plucked one of the seeds, then refolded the cloth and tucked it back into the sack. She crawled over to a patch of dirt on the rocky floor of the canyon and started to make a small hole in the ground with her fingers. Dropping the seed in, she gently covered the hole with the displaced dirt, and patted it down. Silviton stared intently at the dirt.
Nothing happened.
As the sun climbed high in the sky, the canyon warmed up and Silviton grew tired. Her stomach gave up grumbling for the time being and her body gave in to the exhaustion. Her chin rested on her hands as she tried to focus on the dry dirt patch, but still nothing happened. Soon her eyelids sank down and she passed out in the beam of bright light shining down on her as the sun broke through the clouds.
Silviton dreamed mostly of banquests and feasts from years ago, now just a fond memory her starving brain had recalled in some cruel attempt at satiating her hunger. She even dreamt that the seeds were magic, and that they sprouted into a full and lush apple tree brimming with fruit while she slept.
A folded cloth contains 2d4 instant apple tree seeds. Placing a seed into a bit of soil, along with some moisture, will cause the seed to start sprouting. Over the course of 5 minutes, it will grow into a non-magical full size apple tree 10-15 feet tall and wide. The branches are easily climbed, and sprout 4d6 x 10 juicy red and green apples.
The DM decides whether or not the resulting tree will fully take root in the location it is planted. For example, if the tree is not embedded in actual ground, the tree will still grow, but without proper rooting it wont be stable for long and wont survive. After 1d4 days the tree will tip over and will begin to die from lack or nutrients and water. But sometimes, nature finds a way.
